The Inevitable Plateau and I’m OK with it
A few weeks ago, I was at KetoFest and was riveted by Dr. Eric Westman’s talk on adopting a low-carb/high-fat/Keto lifestyle. He addressed plateaus because he said it’s perhaps one of the biggest factors in anyone giving up and reverting to old ways. He made two comments that stuck with me.
- Plateaus are inevitable.
- A downward trend is a far better measure of success than the number on the scale at any one point in time
He also said he never really worries about plateaus unless they go longer than a couple of months.
I’ve felt I’ve been in a plateau for a while. Then I decided to plot my progress. Holy moly take a look!

So I need to keep reminding myself it’s a journey and trends are clearly more important. The funny thing is, Dr. Westman described weight loss exactly like this. A bumpy downward trend. I’ll take it!
